This guide to non-toxic flip-flops and summer sandals will help you avoid hidden toxins found in most conventional footwear.

From safer materials to sustainable brands, we’re sharing everything you need to keep your feet (and your health) happy all summer long.

Picture this, it’s a gorgeous summer day and you’re lounging by the pool, strolling on the beach, or running errands around town.

When you envision this scenario what’s on your feet? Chances are, it’s a pair of your trusty sandals!

Text reading "are your favorite sandals hiding toxic chemicals?, 15 non-toxic sandals you'll love instead", showcasing non-toxic sandals from brands like Wildling Shoes, Be Lenka Feelgoodz and more.

They’re comfortable, easy to slip on and off, and perfect for the hot weather. But did you know your favorite summertime sandals might be toxic?

As I was doing some research for my own family, I stumbled upon some shocking information: many popular flip-flop brands contain toxic chemicals that can be harmful to our health and the environment.

Best Non-Toxic Sandals, in a nutshell…

Just like workout clothes, raincoats, and even swimsuits, your flip-flops might contain anything from carcinogenic compounds to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Turns out these seemingly innocent sandals can be laden with some heavy-duty health threats.

If you’re like me, you want to feel good about what’s on your feet. And it’s more than about how your flip-flops look, it’s about what your flip-flops are made from.

If this sounds like you, you’re in the right place. In this guide we’ll cover:

The great news is there are plenty of safe, non-toxic summer sandals out there.

So, let’s kick off our shoes and take a closer look at the hidden dangers that might be hiding in your favorite pair of flip-flops so we can make better choices for ourselves and the planet.

Did you know that your sandals might be toxic?

You might be surprised to learn that the vast majority of flip-flops on the market today are made from synthetic materials that can be hazardous to your health.

Phthalates (DEHP, DBP, DiDP): These plasticizers are used to make PVC more flexible and durable. However, they are known endocrine disruptors that can interfere with hormone function. Phthalates have been linked to cancer, reproductive harm, and developmental issues.

According to a study by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC), 17 out of 27 pairs of plastic shoes tested positive for phthalates, with some Philippine-made products showing alarming levels:

  • Adorable Dora Children’s Candals: 6.9% DEHP and 4.7% DiDP
  • Chaya Flip-Flops (Chinese-made, and sold in the Philippines): 8.6% DEHP
  • World Balance Men’s Slippers: 9.6% DBP

Bisphenol A (BPA): Commonly found in various plastics, BPA is another endocrine disruptor that can interfere with hormone function. Studies have linked BPA exposure to chromosomal abnormalities, reduced sperm counts, and precancerous tumors in animal studies.

PFAS (Per- and Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances): Often referred to as “forever chemicals,” PFAS are valued for their water and stain-resistant properties. However, they are persistent in the environment and human body and have been associated with kidney and testicular cancers, hormone disruption, liver and thyroid problems, reproductive harm, and developmental delays in children.

Latex: While natural, latex is a prevalent allergen. Direct contact with latex in footwear can lead to allergic reactions ranging from mild skin irritation to severe anaphylactic responses in sensitive individuals.

Prolonged exposure to these materials, especially in footwear that comes into direct contact with the skin, can increase the risk of absorption of these harmful substances, potentially leading to long-term health issues.

Why Hot, Sweaty Feet = More Toxin Absorption

We often think of our skin as a barrier, but it’s more like a sponge, especially when warm, damp, and in direct contact with toxins.

When wearing flip-flops made with PVC, EVA foam, or synthetic rubber, you’re practically marinating in endocrine disruptors like phthalates, BPA, and PFAS.

Here’s how these toxins enter your bloodstream.

During summer months, heat, friction, and sweat open your foot pores and increase blood flow.

Since flip-flops are worn barefoot your sweat acts as a carrier, creating a direct pathway for these harmful substances to enter your body into your bloodstream.

In hot weather, these materials also off-gas more rapidly, so you are also at risk of inhaling these toxic chemicals in addition to absorbing them dermally.

The Difference Between “Non-Toxic” & “Eco-Friendly”

When shopping for safer and more sustainable flip-flops, it’s important to understand the difference between “non-toxic” and “eco-friendly” options.

There are lots of flip-flop and sandal brands marketed as “eco-friendly”. The main focus for these sustainable flip-flop manufacturers is to minimize their product’s environmental impact.

They are often made from sustainable, biodegradable, or recycled materials like natural rubber, cork, hemp, and plant-based leather.

Non-toxic flip-flops go a step beyond sustainable flip-flops and are made without harmful chemicals like phthalates, BPA, and PFAS (also known as “forever chemicals”) which can be found in my recycled materials.

While there is certainly overlap between these two categories, it’s important to recognize that not all eco-friendly flip-flops are necessarily non-toxic, and vice versa.

When searching for the perfect pair of summer sandals, aim to find options that tick both boxes – safe for you and safe for the planet.

Price vs. Value: Are non-toxic sandals worth it?

✅ The Real Cost of Cheap Flip-Flops

That $5 pair of flip-flops from your local big-box store might seem like a steal—but the hidden price tag is much higher than you think.

When you slip them on for a day at the beach or a quick run to the store, you might also be supporting:

  • Unethical Labor Practices: Many mass-produced flip-flops are made in factories across the globe where workers—sometimes even children—endure grueling hours, unsafe conditions, and unlivable wages just to keep prices low.
  • Environmental Damage: Most cheap flip-flops are crafted from petroleum-based plastics like PVC and EVA, which never fully break down. They end up littering beaches, clogging landfills, and shedding microplastics into oceans where they harm marine life.
  • Toxic Exposure: These plastics can contain a cocktail of harmful chemicals like phthalates, BPA, and heavy metals that may leach out over time, especially in the heat. Wearing them directly against your skin for hours could increase your exposure to these hormone-disrupting toxins. Fast fashion footwear might be convenient—but it’s anything but harmless.

✅ The Benefits of Investing in Non-Toxic Flip-Flops

  • Durability That Pays Off: Non-toxic flip-flops are often made from resilient, biodegradable materials like natural rubber, vegetable-tanned leather, or cork. They’re designed to last season after season—no cracking soles or broken straps after a few wears.
  • All-Day Comfort: These aren’t your flimsy foam sandals. Thoughtfully designed, non-toxic flip-flops cushion and support your feet, conforming to your unique shape with every step. Many are even orthopedic-friendly—perfect for beach walks, travel days, or backyard lounging.
  • Peace Of Mind: With every step, you can feel good knowing your shoes aren’t harming your health, the planet, or the people who made them. Ethical brands ensure their products are responsibly sourced, fairly made, and tested for chemical safety.

How to Make Your Non-Toxic Sandals Last Longer

  • Clean Them Regularly: Use a soft brush and mild soap like Castile soap to remove dirt and debris from your sandals after each wear. This will prevent buildup that can break down the materials over time.
  • Protect Them From The Elements: When not in use, store your flip-flops in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Exposure to extreme temperatures and moisture can cause materials like natural rubber and cork to degrade more quickly.
  • Rotate Your Shoes: If you wear flip-flops frequently, consider investing in multiple pairs and rotating them. This will give each pair time to dry out and recover between uses, extending their lifespan.
  • Repair Minor Damage Promptly: If you notice any small tears or separations in your flip-flops, address them right away. Many eco-friendly brands offer repair services or sell replacement parts, which can help you get more use out of your sandals.
  • Recycle Them Responsibly: When your flip-flops do reach the end of their life, look for recycling programs that accept worn-out sandals. Some brands, like Okabashi, even have their own recycling initiatives, making it easy to dispose of your shoes in an environmentally friendly way.

Ready to Ditch the Toxins, One Step at a Time?

I know flip-flops are basically the uniform of summer, and I couldn’t bear to give them up either! And the best part? You don’t have to!

As you’ve seen, there are so many beautiful non-toxic flip-flop brands made from safe, high-quality materials that I have a feeling you won’t even miss your old pair. I know I don’t!

Plus, these safer sandals are built to last, with no more cracked soles or broken straps after just a few wears.

Now that you know what might be hiding in conventional flip-flops, there’s no need to settle for toxic materials just to stay cool.

From natural rubber and cork to vegetable-tanned leather and even algae-based foam, the options out there are stylish, comfy, and totally toxin-free.

So whether you’re heading to the beach, running errands, or just soaking up the sun, you can step out in sandals that look good, feel good, and do good.
